Tuna fishing in southern Spain

In this post we will dive into the deep waters that bathe the coast of Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar, where Atlantic and Mediterranean merge, to follow "the tuna route".

"Estrecho de Gibraltar"

The month of May is special in the province of Cádiz. It is the period when the first tunas approach the coast in the direction of the Mediterranean Sea to spawn. A true delicacy that has been fished in the same way since time immemorial: the "almadraba".
The cities of Barbate, Zahara de los Atunes, Conil and Tarifa have the most fishing boats.

In May and June these towns celebrate authentic gastronomic festivities around this product, coinciding with the "levantás".

In all the restaurants you can find delicious dishes with fresh tuna, however, for me the most delicious delicacy is the "mojama". It is tuna cured with salt, it is very strong in flavor but I think that if you go to Cádiz you should try it!

I think that the most turistic city on the Cadiz coast is Conil de la Frontera, where the typical "Ruta del Tuna" is celebrated, it is a weekend series in which all the restaurants make innovative and truly incredible dishes with tuna. All tourists visit the restaurants and try all kinds of "tapas". Then you choose which restaurant has had the most success or has prepared the best "tapas".

I hope you really liked today's entry, if you want to know more about tuna or our gastronomic tradition leave your question in the comments!

See you :)

  1. Hi Ana. I want to add to your entry that the technics to fish tunas are traditional, they fish them one by one, nothing about machines or something new. Like always our ancestors did.
